Eating on a Budget: Vancouver

By Tammy · On September 11, 2018

Vancouver is one of the nicest cities in Canada, and it’s a popular travel destination with tourists from all over the world. As gorgeous as it is, it also has a reputation for being one of the most expensive cities in the country. While Vancouver certainly is one of the pricier cities in Canada, that doesn’t mean you can’t make a visit cheaper than it has to be. Food is always something I try to budget first, because it’s easy to make sure you keep your spending under control when it comes to the food you eat. Here are three restaurants with some of the cheapest eats in Vancouver, and I hope this short list helps you save some money next time you’re in the city.

Lucy’s Eastside Diner

My boyfriend loves Denny’s, but it’s not the cheapest diner around. Lucy’s is a great little place, and there’s really never a bad time to eat breakfast food. They’re also open 24 hours a day, and they’ve got everything you expect of an all-night diner restaurant—which is great! We love getting the All Day & Night Breakfast special, which is a place full of home fries, two slices of toast, two eggs, and some bacon. It’s quite filling, so we usually split one between the two of us.

Yogi Korean Snack Bar

Being from Toronto, I’m used to being able to find delicious East Asian foods at a steal. Vancouver has an amazingly diverse population, too, and one of my favourite East Asian restaurants is Yogi over on Robson Street. Korean food is so delicious, and Yogi does it right. I love getting kim bab and ramen, and my boyfriend loves their rice cakes and dumplings. Everything on their menu is under $10, and most items are under $7! We like to split a plate of kim bab and some rice cakes and rice, and we can get all that for much less than $20!

Budgies Burritos

Burritos are great, and depending on where you go, they can be a delicious and filling budget meal. Budgies Burritos makes fantastic burritos with some of the freshest and tastiest ingredients ever, and the prices are amazing considering how much food you get! The regular sized burritos cost between $7 and $8, and to upgrade to larger burritos, just add an extra dollar! My favourite burritos are the Blair Stanley and the Jamedog.
