I didn’t grow up in a family that celebrated Christmas, believe it or not. I love the holiday now, but that’s mostly because I’m in love with a nice boy who grew up in a very Catholic and Italian home. On Christmas Eve and Christmas Day, my family would use the holiday as an excuse to indulge in Chinese food. We never went out for all-you-can-eat sushi because of the price increases (we’re Scottish and cheap, y’all), so Chinese was really the only reasonable option. When I’m not doing Christmas with my boyfriend, I default to the old family tradition of getting take-out from Chinese restaurants for Christmas dinner. If you’re in the same boat, here are 3 of my favourite Chinese restaurants in the Greater Toronto Area if you find yourself in the area this Christmas and want to grab something.
China 8
Located in a plaza on Tenth Line, China 8 is my favourite Chinese restaurant for Christmas dinner in Mississauga. It’s very affordable, and their food is so flavourful that I used to go there at least twice a week when I was in school. My favourite dishes are their coconut shrimp, red Thai curry, and mushroom fried rice, and my boyfriend and I both love their Shanghai noodles. The staff are very sweet, I love dropping by on Christmas to say hello when I’m in the area whether I’m celebrating or not.
Sea Hi Famous Chinese Food
If you’re in downtown Toronto this Christmas, stop by Sea Hi for some delicious chop suey, which is what they’re famous for. Another thing they’re famous for in the city is their plum sauce, because it’s homemade. It’s so fruity and flavourful, you’ll wonder how you ever thought the plum sauce you’re used to eating passed for plum sauce at all! The restaurant looks a bit rundown from the outside, but don’t be afraid because the food is amazing!
Golden Lake Chinese Food
Proudly serving Bramptonians since 1987, Golden Lake is one of the staple Chinese restaurants in the area. The family who owns it is very kind, and their food is delicious. They have options that range from Americanized dishes like General Tso’s, to more authentic Chinese options, and I really enjoy eating there.
